TRENTON -- The mother of 3 young children is hoping people will watch surveillance footage and step forward with information that leads to the guys who stole her 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan then dumped it after a hit-and-run. Keri Hidalgo said she started her car at 8:20 on the morning of April 27 then ran inside her house on the 700 block of William Street to get her kids to take them to school. William Street is on the Trenton-Hamilton border near Cedar and Capner, a relatively safe area, she said.
Hidalgo's home surveillance camera recorded 2 young guys in and out of the picture before returning seconds later and hopping in the car and taking off -- well after first driving into the curb then backing up to free tires and speeding away for good. Hidalgo said Trenton police recovered the caravan hours later in an abandoned lot on North Willow Street and told her it had been involved in a hit-and-run accident, leaving it all but totaled.
She said cops told her that they wouldn't look for the perps, then they gave her a ticket "for leaving my engine running."
"It's the house I grew up in," Hidalgo told The Trentonian at 5 o'clock today. "I've never had any trouble there."
Here is the surveillance video of the thieves. Do you recognize them? Do you know someone who might know them? Call the Trenton cops at (609) 989-3945.
Besides totaling the car, Hidalgo said the thieves ripped out and stole 3 car seats and some of her 6-year-old daughter's blankets.
When cops arrived to take her report, they ticketed Hidalgo for leaving her car running.
