TRENTON -- The El Latino TV en Vivo! studio became a music studio for about 5 minutes Thursday night when Oscar Torres broke out his guitar and began to sing to Jenny Lopez. And that's when Trentonian newsroom staffers looked at me like "WHAAAT!?!?! DO NOT PLAY MUSIC ON DEADLINE!"
But by now we at El Latino TV en Vivo! had bought the ticket. The ride had just begun. Torres, the owner of Tropical Family Restaurant (120 Lalor Street), plucked his guitar and sang to the Guatemalan mujer wearing the colorful 2012 Liga Ecuatoriana de Futbol sash.
En Contacto Con la Comunidad host Carlos Avila did not run this part of the program by me. I would have told him that the Trentonian sports department probably would have had a little issue with Latino musica en vivo! as deadline bore down on them. They were understanding last week when Justice League Trenton showed up for "Makin' Moves with Phil Jackson," but this singsong moment was a bit much for the sports guys. I was waiting for George O'Gorman to storm over to Torres, grab his guitar and smash it over mi cabeza.
That said, the song Torres sang was soft and sweet, sweet as Lil J-Lo's smile, and at the end of the day I enjoyed that we at El Latino TV en Vivo! tried something new during a live broadcast and that it succeeded -- which is why I'm moving full-thrust with the idea to begin production of "Sabado Musical!" Stay tuned for details.
